Introduction

Lacie (レイシー, Reishī) was a character from Jun Mochizuki's Pandora Hearts. Made a human sacrifice prior to the Tragedy of Sablier,[1] she is a figure shrouded in mystery. Just before his Coming-of-Age Ceremony, Oz Vessalius discovers a grave belonging to her, though her name had eroded from the headstone. From it he picks up a golden pocket watch which would play a song when opened.[2] This melody is called "Lacie," composed by Glen Baskerville. His best friend, Jack Vessalius, helped make the pocket watch with him after her death.[3] She was somehow close to Glen, and her death has some connection to the Tragedy of Sablier.[1]

Few specifics are known of Lacie's early childhood. At some point around three decades prior to the Tragedy of Sablier, Lacie was born, a year or two after her elder brother Oswald. Her two red eyes branded her as a Child of Ill Omen, and she and her brother were abandoned or otherwise separated from their biological parents in their early youth.[4] At some point around the age of ten, Oswald and Lacie would discover the Droplets of Golden Light, turning them into Baskervilles. Soon after, the two of them would travel to Sablier, and Lacie would begin to commune with the Core of the Abyss. Once they arrived at the Baskerville estate, Oswald was found to be the next incarnation of Glen Baskerville. The two of them were then personally raised by the then Glen Baskerville, Levi, Oswald to succeed him, and Lacie to be executed in adulthood.[5]

Over the next few years, Lacie and the Core would develop a deep relationship, though the Core had no physical form and could not speak. However, Lacie was forbidden from speaking to the Core. Prior to her puberty, Lacie learned from Levi why she would be executed and why she was not to speak to the Core again. He then asked her consent in an "experiment" in which Levi would impregnate Lacie prior to her execution.[5] Though Lacie lacked the normal Baskerville compulsion to obey Glen without question, she agreed in hopes of giving the Core a companion after Lacie met her own demise.[6] As a symbol of their love even in parting, Lacie gave the Core a stuffed rabbit, an identical version of which she kept for herself.[7]

Lacie then grew into a rebellious, fickle teenager, making frequent flights from the Baskerville estate before being found and returned. At around age fifteen, one of these excursions led her to an emaciated Jack Vessalius, whom she saved on a whim.[8] She and Jack reunited for the first time eight years later. While Jack was elated, Lacie did not remember him until she realized one of his earrings matched her own.[9] Over the next few months, she and Jack formed a tenuous yet emotional friendship.[10] A few days before her execution, she asked Jack to not visit the estate for a week.[5] In the time he was gone, she gave the second rabbit to the Core, asking her to take what was in Lacie's womb upon her death.[7] Oswald then executed Lacie, succeeding Levi as Glen.[6]

Appearance[]

Lacie was a thin, pale skinned woman of above average height and build. She had a round, somewhat angular face with a well defined chin, thin eyebrows, and narrow red eyes. Straight, black hair fell to about the length of her hips, unstyled and somewhat messy. Long bangs fell onto her face, but did not cover her eyes. Jun Mochizuki noted that Lacie's countenance was a point of fixation as she drew her, and that she would end up making Lacie's face rather handsome while meaning to give her a more feminine beauty.

In most of her adult appearances, Lacie wore an ankle length black dress with numerous petticoats, a frilly, purple outer layer adorning her outfit. Though her sleeves would extend past her elbow, the top of her dress exposed her neck, shoulders, and some cleavage. A purple ribbon served as a neck piece, and black flats protected her feet. Lacie seemed to own a fair amount of jewelry, but did not wear much in her canonical appearance, restricting herself to a pair of teardrop earrings.

Her most prominent childhood appearance was in her adolescence, during which she wore a simple, white summer dress. She was never shown attempting to hide her eyes, though she may have early in life. In her teens, she bore a strong resemblance to her twin daughters Alice and the Intention of the Abyss.

Personality[]

Little can be discerned about Lacie's personality from her early appearances, in which she had a total of about two lines. From the single scene in which she was depicted, it could be discerned that she was open and daring, standing in the snow wearing nothing but a summer dress. She appeared extroverted and lacking in superficiality, approaching a cloaked, impoverished boy on the streets without any apparent concern. However, this single scene provided little direct information about her, and most of what could be discerned was apparent only in symbolism.

In actuality, Lacie was a fickle, rebellious person who had no qualms in acting out of spite. Her meeting with Jack was truly on a whim, and when the two met, she had no problem outright insulting and even physically harming him. However, she did save him from starvation and seemed genuinely concerned with his circumstances and will to live. At the end of their encounter, Lacie was attacked for being Ill Omened—yet her anger was not at her own assault, but at harm which came to Jack. Her mood was capricious, switching from anger to glee within moments in spite of the scene around her. She had no concern for propriety, reveling in the death and dismemberment of her attackers.

As an adult, Lacie seemed marginally more stable, if still rather distant and nonconformist, though Jack stated she "hadn't changed a bit." Upon Jack's arrival, she would have no memory of him, and seemed confused but otherwise indifferent to his assault on her. After she was reminded of their encounter, she grew somewhat more warm, comforting Jack prior to his departure. She did not reject Jack once he began to return to the Baskerville Estate, though she, like her brother, remained distrustful of him. Jack understood her feelings, refusing to touch or approach her following their first encounter, though Lacie was frequently intimate with him. Openly, she regarded Jack as nothing more than a pet, telling Levi he was a means of killing time.

Despite her apparent spitefulness, disregard, and occasional sadism, Lacie held a deep empathy for those around her. She was the first person to correctly identify the Core of the Abyss as a person with will and feelings, and sought to see her in the Core's loneliness, despite being forbidden by Glen. From the moment of her induction into the Baskerville Clan, Lacie held no artificial reverie for Glen. Instead, she was critical and philosophical, believing that the world must be viewed through the lens of "why," going directly against Glen's own philosophical advice to her. While she claimed to not care for Jack, she in fact greatly treasured their meetings, not realizing her own loneliness until shortly before her death. The last fragment of Lacie's soul to escape the darkness of the Abyss was her declaration of love for the world.

Chain[]

As a chosen Messenger of the Abyss, it was mandatory for Lacie to form a Contract with a Chain. Thus, Lacie formed a Contract with an as-of-yet unnamed rabbit-like Chain with a crown floating above its head. Through Lacie's Chain, she is capable of summoning forth numerous bladed chain links that can dismember human bodies with ease. Apart from this, it is generally unknown what other abilities Lacie had access to through her Chain.

  • As a Child of Ill Omen, Lacie was able to wrench open a Door to the Abyss without the use of the Keys to the Abyss after disrupting the power within the Abyss' dark heart and disturbing the Core of the Abyss.
  • Lacie is also capable of entering the dark heart of the Abyss and coming into contact with the Core of the Abyss, due to her existence as a Child of Ill Omen.

Trivia[]

PH 24 plus 1 Lacie profile

Lacie's profile in 24 + 1: Last Dance

  • "Lacie" is an anagram of "Alice," which lampshades Lacie and Alice's relation as mother and daughter.
    • The name "Lacie" is mentioned extremely briefly, only once, in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.[11] The quote reads: "'Once upon a time there were three little sisters,' the Dormouse began in a great hurry; 'and their names were Elsie, Lacie, and Tillie; and they lived at the bottom of a well—'
  • Lacie may be loosely based off of the Red Queen[12] from Lewis Carroll's Alice Through the Looking-Glass,[13] though the evidence for this mainly involves Lacie's relation to Oswald, who is loosely based off the Red King.[14]
  • Her likes are, in order, singing and bothering whomever is her current favorite. Her dislikes are, in order, bugs that move meanderingly and bugs that have many legs.
  • Her skills include reading her brother's moods. She is weak when it comes to cooking and sewing.
  • Mochizuki's comment on her is that she drew her with the intention of expressing her as a person just as selfish as Levi. However if it weren't for her presence, Jack would not have survived and the story would never have unfolded.
