Template:Character - CSoV Jeanne, sometimes identified as the Hellfire Witch, is a Vampire from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas who acts as the Chevalier to Luca - a young Vampire of noble birth seeking to aid his Curse-Bearing elder brother. In order to take on this role, Jeanne left her former life as a Bourreau working under Lord Ruthven, a task which has proven to be difficult for her. Recently, Jeanne and Luca arrived in Paris in search of Vanitas, knowing that he holds The Book of Vanitas. Together they track Vanitas' movements through Paris with the intent of receiving The Book of Vanitas from him, being of the mind that if the grimoire is destroyed then all Curse Bearing Vampires would be set free from their affliction. When their attempt to reason with Vanitas proves unsuccessful, Jeanne reveals her true nature as Lord Ruthven's Bourreau and attacks Vanitas and Noé with her Crimson Gauntlet, Carpe Diem. Ultimately however, Jeanne and Luca allow Vanitas and Noé to escape, as Luca strives to prevent Jeanne from killing again.

Description

Appearance

During the battle between human and vampires, the Hellfire Witch was depicted with long flowing hair and a slender body. She was described by Vanitas of the Blue Moon as a young warrior maiden with such beauty that it made her shudder.

In recent times, her hair has been cut short above her chin to cover her ears. She has striking yellow eyes and full lips.

Personality

Jeanne is fiercely protective of Luca and gives off an air of rigidity and power while conducting her duty as his chevalier; however, she is prone to frantic outbursts, especially when in the presence of Vanitas, whom she dislikes. Due to her past as a bourreau, she is unused to having kindness directed towards her, and as a result, easily becomes flustered when she receives it.[1]

History

Jeanne was adopted by her parents, Louise and Éric after being found by them on the street one day. Jeanne has no memories from before this incident other than a strange memory of being inside a lab tube filled with liquid.

Jeanne was happy with her new parents, and grew to be an extremely energetic and cheerful young girl. She travelled with her parents and her "teacher", August Ruthven, and had a penchant for running around. She seems to have had a talent for catching wild game, including but not limited to flying birds.

In between her travels with Ruthven and her parents, Jeanne spent some time in Gévadaun under the care of Chloé d'Apchier. The two grew very close during this time, with Jeanne running around the castle and Chloe chasing after her. Jeanne unknowingly broke Chloe out of an invisible cage created by the latter's firm belief that she should never go outside.

Unfortunately Jeanne's happy life came to an untimely end. Her parents were accused of conspiring against Ruthven and the vampires and were beheaded right in front of Jeanne. A traumatized Jeanne became a borreau working for Lord Ruthven and was forced into acting as a tool. Jeanne slaughtered countless people wielding the Carpe Diem.

At some point in her time as a borreau, Jeanne was forced to hunt the Beast of Gévaudan, whom she and those around her believed was her old friend Chloe. She was reluctant to follow this order but had no other choice. Chloe, to Jeanne's surprise, begged Jeanne to kill her. Despite this command Chloe jumped off a cliff before Jeanne could kill her and escaped.

After Ruthven brought the war between humans and vampires to a close, Jeanne was put into an induced slumber. For some reason she was awoken recently and became close to Luca Oriflamme. Luca, as Grand Duke, made Jeanne his chevalier.

Plot

Parisian Excursion Arc

Jeanne is first introduced approaching Vanitas and Noé with Luca. Luca introduces himself and Jeanne, and proceeds to ask for the Book of Vanitas. When Vanitas refuses to hand the book over, Luca asks Jeanne to attack Vanitas and Noé and retrieve the Book. Jeanne attacks immediately with lethal force, but Noé manages to fend her off and the two escape. Luca reminds Jeanne that she is a chevalier now, not a borreau, and that she isn’t to kill anymore.

Hunters of the Dark Arc

Jeanne, after speaking with Dominique about how to get Vanitas to leave her alone, decides to take him on a date and pretend to be in love with him so that he will fall out of love with her. She sends a note to Vanitas inviting him on a date.

When Vanitas shows up, Jeanne lies to him and tells him that she’s fallen for him. Vanitas makes an expression of complete disgust, much to Jeanne’s delight. Despite her best efforts, however, Vanitas seems to see through the act and ups the ante, complimenting Jeanne on her dress and seeming to be happy over this turn of events. Jeanne blushes over Vanitas’s compliments.

During the date Jeanne is distracted by an airship overhead, and Vanitas saves her from an incoming vehicle. Much to her frustration Jeanne manages to enjoy the date, sightseeing in Paris and eating snacks.

At the end of the day, while Vanitas takes a bathroom break, Jeanne practices confessing her love to Vanitas. She finds the words extremely hard to say. Vanitas materializes behind her and cheerfully comments that he likes her too. Jeanne yells that he’s supposed to hate her and gaze at her scornfully, not say that. Vanitas finds this amusing.

At this moment a group of children run by. One of them falls over and scrapes his knee. Jeanne is immediately overwhelmed by bloodlust and her eyes turn red, and surrounding passerby begin yelling ”vampire”. Before Jeanne can attack Vanitas puts his hand over her mouth and Dante, who had been watching with Dominique nearby, throws up a smokescreen.

Vanitas and Jeanne escape to an atelier, where Vanitas asks Jeanne if she’s a cursebearer, addicted to blood, or something else. Jeanne is unable to answer. Vanitas asks Jeanne if someone has forbidden her from speaking about it, which prompts Jeanne to remember Ruthven commanding her to swear something.

Jeanne begs Vanitas for blood. He permits this, and she drinks desperately. She sees a vision of Luca, dead because of her. Jeanne asks Vanitas what she’ll do if she hurts Luca one day with her strange sickness. Vanitas replies that if that time comes, he’ll kill her, so she has nothing to worry about.

Chloé d'Apchier

Jeanne met Chloé in Jeanne's youth while the her parents were students under Lord Ruthven's tutelage. Upon this first meeting, Jeanne was instantly enthralled by Chloé's beauty, mistaking her for a talking doll, much to Chloé and Ruthven's amusement. Having been left in Marquis d'Apchier's castle where Chloé resided, Jeanne grew close to Chloé, learning various lessons and games from the senior vampire and coming to regard her as an elder sister.

A young Jeanne with Chloé

Jeanne became attached to Chloé and was distraught when the time came to part. To console the younger vampire, Chloé asked Jeanne to return to Gévaudan to play again when she was grown. Ironically, when Jeanne did eventually return, it was as a bourreau with the purpose of killing the Beast of Gévaudan -- who she would discover to be Chloé. Due to Jeanne's hesitation, she was unable to kill Chloé, failing her duty much to her regret.[3]

With the Beast of Gévaudan's reappearance, Jeanne believes that due to her previous failure, it is now her responsibility to kill Chloé, and thereby slaying the Beast.[4]

Lord Ruthven

Lord Ruthven was originally the mentor of Jeanne's late parents, Eric and Louise, both of whom were his students when they met.[5] However, upon the start of the war his pupils were deliberately targeted in an attack, and the building in which they resided was burnt down, causing him great anguish.[5] As a result, he began to raise Jeanne after their death, and Jeanne in turn admired him and was willing to take his advice. [3]Jeanne continues to value her connection to Lord Ruthven, and being his former borreau also places the highest importance upon following his orders.[6]

Noé Archiviste

At the moment Noé and Jeanne seem to be casual acquaintances. The two have interacted a handful of times and seem to be on good terms, but have stronger bonds with other people that overshadow their interactions.

Dominique de Sade
